After 35 Years, the Bay View Bengal Has a Name

After 35 years, the Bay View Bengal has a name.

Earlier this fall, Michelle Cavanagh ’86 started a Change.org petition calling on St. Mary Academy – Bay View to consider naming the Bay View mascot “Angell” in honor of Sue Angell Malone ’86, with whom she started the Bay View Spirit Club. Malone is credited with leading the initiative of changing the school’s mascot from the Blazer to Bengal in 1986.

In celebration of the Class of 1986’s 35th reunion year, Cavanagh believed this would be a special way to honor their anniversary while also paying tribute to Malone, who is living with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

“Our sister Susan Angell Malone (’86) is a fighter,” wrote Cavanagh in the online petition. “Sue is a warrior who has fought stage four Pancreatic Cancer for years like the Bengal she is. She exemplifies what it is to be a Bengal.”

The petition made it to the Bay View 20–21 Student Council who unanimously voted on naming the Bengal “Angell.”
