St. Mary Academy - Bay View

March 3, 2021

Dear Bay View Community,

After a two-month local and national search, I am pleased to announce that we have selected the next principal of St. Mary Academy – Bay View.  Dr. Marcela C. Rossi has accepted the position of Pre K – 12 principal beginning July 1, 2021 – and I am eager to share some of the many reasons that make Dr. Rossi such a compatible and compelling fit for our community.

From the outset of our pursuit to obtain the next transformational leader of Bay View, the search committee, Board of Trustees, and I sought a candidate with a proven record of experience, a dynamic vision for a holistic and mission-driven learning environment, and an appreciation for the immeasurable value of an all-girls education.  In short, someone to carry on the legacy of purpose, excellence, and achievement that Ms. Gribbin and Mrs. Cummings have provided Bay View during their administrative tenure.  In Dr. Rossi, I believe deeply that we have found that leader.

Dr. Rossi holds a Ph.D. in Applied Biological Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a B.S. in Physics with a minor in English Literature from Fordham University, and she is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.  Beginning her career in 1996 as a middle and high school math and science teacher, Dr. Rossi eventually went on to become a high school principal in 2014 and has served as an administrator ever since – with her most recent positions as the Head of School at two PreK-12 schools in Chile.  Over a career that spans nearly 25 years in education, Dr. Rossi joins us with seven years of experience as a Pre K-12 Head of School – a highlight of her profile in leadership that was essential to us as we prepare to implement a re-imagined administrative model that will feature one PreK-12 principal at Bay View.  Dr. Rossi readily recognizes that her years as a PreK-12 Head of School were seasoned by her experience as a classroom teacher who has an affinity for both the sciences and the humanities.  At her core, Dr. Rossi is a passionate and forward-thinking educator whose every effort is focused on connecting with her students and guiding them to their full flourishment in the classroom and beyond.  As an educational leader, Dr. Rossi’s first-hand familiarity with teaching has enabled her to collaborate with her faculty in ways that are uniquely supportive and understanding as they partner to position all students for success.

Beyond the specifics of Dr. Rossi’s resume are details from our conversations that point toward her readiness to continue the tradition of exemplary, mission-inspired leadership at Bay View.  The product of an all-girls K-12 education herself, Dr. Rossi values the intellectual curiosity, exploration, discovery, and reflection that are possible within a learning environment that is tailored exclusively to young women.  She also believes in a learning community that is built around trust and collaboration – beginning with the trust that parents invest in our school to educate their daughters, and the collaboration involved in the collective enterprise of educators to contribute to the growth and development of their students. In our efforts to continuously improve upon this learning environment at Bay View, I realize that I am not only appointing a new principal, but a role model for our students whose own character, integrity, and adoption of our mission will be essential to her leadership.  It is my sincere belief that as a Catholic and someone whose vocation has been devoted to the service of educating children, Dr. Rossi will make the Mercy mission her own and lead our school community to even higher heights of achievement and success.

Dr. Rossi and I know that our every step in this new journey together will be taken for you – our students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and all who support Bay View.  In the coming weeks, you will be invited to Zoom meetings to meet Dr. Rossi so that she can answer any questions you may have and begin to foster the relationships and authentic partnerships that I anticipate will define her commitment to engaged, approachable, and collaborative leadership.

Please join me in my prayers of gratitude, joy, and hope as we welcome Dr. Rossi to Bay View!

In Mercy,

Sister Marybeth Beretta
