History & Social Sciences

The goal of the Middle School History and Social Sciences Program is to encourage our students to explore the cultures, traditions, and history of a wide range of geographic areas. In doing so, students will uncover the richness, complexity, diversity, and commonality of the human story. The program includes an emphasis on creative expression, class discussions and evaluating primary sources. We believe that history is an exciting subject that teaches us the story of those who came before us and provides many lessons as we make decisions about our future.

Grade 6 students examine early human civilizations, early Greek and Roman history, and the development of European society. In Grade 7, students will discover the histories of India, China, Japan, the Middle East, and African Kingdoms. They will also develop their research skills by participating in the National History Day Program. Grade 8 students concentrate their studies on United States History including the pre-Columbian period, exploration and colonization, and the American Revolution through the Civil War. The course includes an in-depth study of the United States Constitution and the role it plays in today’s world.
