Grade 1
Grade 1 is a year of many important transitions. Much of the play from preschool and kindergarten is left behind as children transition into developing deeper academic skills. Grade 1 students progress from beginning reading and writing skills to becoming beginning readers and writers with greater comprehension and ability.
Grade 1 students continue to develop their addition and subtraction skills gaining a deeper understanding of the concepts as they practice and gain mastery of these skills. Technology becomes a more important part of our class as students learn about and use it more. Our day is made up of whole group, small group, and independent work that all takes place in a safe and caring environment.
Grade 1 uses the social skills they developed in preschool and kindergarten in more mature ways. They start to develop the skills to reason and think logically. Our Grade 1 students participate in activities which foster community throughout the year. For example, “Big and Little Sisters” and “Lunch Buddies.” The students also continue to learn about their spirituality and integrate the ideals of Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, into their everyday lives.
