Grade 4

Grade 4 is an exciting time for children to become more responsible and take greater ownership of their learning. Grade 4 also contains another leap–toward independent work. In Grade 4, students are shifting from “learning to read” into a stage called “reading to learn.”  In our Language Arts Program, students will read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts which will strengthen the development of their decoding, comprehension, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expect more complex ideas, students should be able to write essays which use several kinds of sentence structures, select a focus and a point of view. Building on previous concepts—such as place value, addition, subtraction, rounding, multiplication, division, and measurement—fourth grade is a time of strengthening math skills as well. The students will work with fractions, decimals, long division, measurement and basic geometry like quadrilaterals. Grade 4 science and social studies curricula provide ways not only to teach these wonderful subjects but to incorporate the student’s growing skills in reading, math, engineering, and communication as well.
