Oughterard is located near the west coast of Ireland about 2½ hours from Dublin and 3½ hours from Rosslare port. It’s approximately a 1¼ hour drive from Shannon airports.

Galway City center – great place which offers quiet situations as well as extremely lively ones. Excellent art gallery and antiques/collectables shop.

Ashford Castle – superb castle with great golf course in its own stunning grounds.

Cong – very picturesque village, setting from the famous ‘Quiet Man’ film starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

Westport – very quaint town just over the border in County Mayo.

Clifden – The Wright Brothers landed here in the first transatlantic flight.

Kylemore Abbey – fantastic gothic country house with superb gardens.

Connemara National Park – Oughterard is the start of it but there is also so much to see including mountains, loughs, sea and forests.


There are eight pubs in the Oughterard! All pubs do good restaurant and bar food serving drinks until late.

Golf: There's Oughterard Golf Course plus many courses in 25 mile radius including seven championship courses.

Fishing: Lough Corrib – some of the best fishing in Ireland. Many other river and sea fishing opportunities.

Walks: So many to choose from – best to go to the tourist office and see all of the ones which they recommend, depending on the time you want to spend and your keenness/fitness!

Drives: Take a drive all the way around the Lough – go through Oughterard toward Maam Cross, then towards Cong, Headford, into Galway and back to Oughterard. You can drive out of Oughterard towards Clifden on the N59 and just explore the wilds of the Connemara National Park at your leisure. For a slightly longer journey, drive to the Cliffs of Moher – a fantastic journey with breathtaking views at the end of it.

Beaches: Dog Bay, near Clifden – one of the best beaches in Ireland and very quiet.
