Middle School Track Eastern Division Championship

The middle school track team competed in the Eastern Division Championship meet, at Barrington High School. Once again, our young women performed brilliantly. Leading the way was our three year track veteran, Aliya Barrows.  When she wasn't mentoring our younger athletes with advice and words of encouragement, she was placing first in the open 400 meter dash (68 sec) and second in the 200 meter dash (29.5 sec).  Aliya was also the anchor in the winning 4 x 400 meter relay.  Other 4 x 400 meter relay team members included grade six athletes Jayla Wilson, Kayleigh Quinn & Malena Corso. Kayleigh, Jayla & Malena also enjoyed individual victories in the open sprint events.  Malena placed third in the 400 m, Kayleigh claimed the 5th spot on the podium in the 200 open & Jayla finished third in the 100 m dash.  Olivia Granatiero had four phenomenal performances in the meet as well.  Olivia has worked incredibly hard this season and it was wonderful to finally see everything "click" for her.  She placed 1st in the turbo javelin event throwing a personal best (PR) of 70 plus feet, 3rd in the 80 m hurdles with a PR and state qualifying time of 15.2 sec., 5th in the long jump with a PR and state qualifying distance of 12'9" ft., and was the second leg in the 2nd place finishing 4 x 100 m relay team.  Other members of the 4 x 100 m relay included grade 8 athletes Brooke Nyman, Lily Gucfa, & Gina Abbruzzi. Lily Gucfa also triumphed in an individual event as well as she leaped a PR and state qualifying distance in the long jump (12'7"). Also earning a position to compete on the division team were 6th grade athletes Spenser Hamilton (100), Frankie Dos Reis (100 m), Maggie Green (long jump & turbo jav), & Emily Kiely (turbo jav).  Overall Bay View earned enough points to secure a third place finish.
Great job ladies.  I am so proud of you.

Middle School Track
The Bay View Middle School track team has ended its regular season and is now ready for the Division and State meet championships.  Much has happened since the last performance update.  Grade 6 athletes Melina Corso (71 sec) and Kaleigh Quinn (69 sec) ran qualifying times in the 400 meter dash.  Aliyah Barrows, grade 8, clocked two personal best (PR) times in the 400 m (61 sec) and in the 200 m (28.8 sec).  Our Jayla Wilson has continued to run state qualifying marks in the 100 meters over the past three meets despite the non-ideal weather conditions.  Not only have Malena and Aliyah been running stellar race times but these young ladies also have earned state qualifying heights in the high jump (4'0" or higher).  Finally, Olivia Granitiero, (grade 8), has earned a position to compete in the javelin at the division and state meet by launching the javelin over 64 feet.  All of our girls have been working hard and many have earned PRs in their events during the past few meets.  Great job!

Despite a slow start and trailing by 5 points at the half, our girls came out like gangbusters to start the second half with tenacious defense and clutch shooting.  They imposed their will over the Rams and, with about a minute left to go, and with the outcome no longer in doubt, the celebration began.  What they accomplished was an amazing testimony to THE POWER OF TEAM!!  Toughness, desire, and grit prevailed!  Together we can...Together WE DID!

Tournament honors were as follows:  All-Tournament Team: Senior Morgan Burke and Junior Mikaela Lee.  Mikaela was also named Tournament Most Valuable Player.  I am sure that Morgan and Mikaela would gladly share their honors with their teammates!"

Kingstown on Tuesday, February 17.  The gym was superbly decorated and Seniors Francesca Corsinetti, Rylee Leonard, Sofia Cabral, Morgan and Abbey Burke all started the game as a unit.  Fun was had and happy were the Moms and Dads, but, someone forget to tell the team there was a game going on!   At half-time our Bengals only had scored 8 points!   Missed layups and cold free throw shooting was the norm.  Did someone put Saran Wrap over the hoop?!
Good thing for second halves as we scored 29 points and won the game, 37-28.  High scorer was Abbey Burke with 11 points.

"Congratulation to the 2014 middle school track team for a fantastic season of physical and spiritual growth.  We welcomed many new and familiar faces to our team this year.  I am so grateful to our seasoned athletes for setting a great example for their new teammates.  I also want to commend the new athletes for accepting the challenge of the sport whole heartily.  I saw so much growth in each of you.  The obvious growth was in the outstanding number of "PRs" achieved by the team.  Everyone on the team earned a personal best (PR) in one or more events throughout the season.  With that being said, the more subtle and most important mode of growth came in the form of attitude.  You performed your training tasks with such focus and determination each practice. I am so proud of all of you."
Sincerely, Coach Johnson

The Bay View basketball team went up against rivals, LaSalle Academy, on Friday night. Right from the start, the Bengals looked prominent in their first league game of the season; ending the first half with a ten point lead. However, in the second half, LaSalle was able to make a comeback. With some foul trouble and slight injuries, the outcome of the game was questionable. With under ten minutes left of the game, LaSalle pulled ahead. Not losing hope, the Bay View Bengals didn't go down without a fight. Key steals and layups from Raquel Pederzani '14, Morgan Burke '15, Rylee Leonard '15, and Paige Monk '14 kept Bay View in the game. The score swayed as the clock ticked down. Abigail Burke '15 was put on the foul line...knocking both down shots to tie the basketball game. Then, the Bay View Bengals came up with two fast break layups to steal the game 59-55.

"Our season came to a close during the semifinal game at East Greenwich High School. After a scoreless first and second half of the game, we went into the first over time with a tied score of zero to zero. The game was very evenly matched and we played with everything we had. During the 4th minute of the second half of overtime East Greenwich scored on a corner kick. The final score of the game was 1 to 0. Although we lost that game I could not have been more proud of our team. We played with so much heart and left everything we had out on the field. We had a great season with a  final record of 10-1-3."

BAY VIEW ACADEMY ATHLETES EARN LOCAL AND NATIONAL HONORS

Bay View Academy’s Bengals have been earning accolades on the local and national level, with three appointments to the US Lacrosse All-Academic Team and multiple Providence Journal All-State selections.
Alexandra Scala ‘14, Paige Monk ‘14 and Taylor Coffey ‘14, Bay View Academy lacrosse players, have been named to the US Lacrosse All-Academic Team. Nominees for this honor must be a starter or significant contributor to the team. They must also maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 out of a 4.0 scale and carry a course load of at least 50% college preparatory, honors or advanced placement courses.
According to www.USLacrosse.org, an All-Academic team member is a “player who exhibits exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represents high standards of academic achievement in the classroom. This player should also have left her mark beyond the lacrosse field and the classroom by making significant contributions of service to the school and/or community.”

Seven Bay View students earned All-State titles from The Providence Journal, including a pair of twin sisters for softball, a freshman who earned first team in golf, and senior, Erica Johnson, who was named First Team All-State for not one but two races in Outdoor Track and FieldThe following are the award winners broken down by sport, complete with their Providence Journal bio where applicable.

Providence Journal All-State Team Members:
FIRST TEAM:
Outdoor Track:
Erica Johnson ‘13, 800m and 400m
Johnson concluded her track career with two more gold medals, winning the 400-meter dash in 56.67 seconds and the 800-meter run in 2:13.14. The Bay View grad, who is bound for Columbia in the fall, placed fifth in the 800 at the New England Championships in 2:10.84 and eighth at the New Balance Nationals with a time of 2:09.66.
www.projo.com

Softball :
Courtney McArthur ‘13, In-fielder
McArthur helped Bay View overcome a first-round loss to top-seeded Lincoln and keep its playoff hopes alive for four more games before eventually finishing third in the Division I state tournament. The Bengals’ clean-up hitter batted a team-leading .518 with a slugging percentage of .895. Four of her 42 hits were home runs and she finished with 23 RBI and 29 runs scored. Defensively, McArthur, who will play softball at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, posted a .982 fielding percentage at first base. www.projo.com

Shannon McArthur ‘13, Out-fielder
Bay View, the ninth seed after going 8-8 during the regular season, made an unlikely run through the playoffs with the help of McArthur’s steady glove in left field and her consistent hitting in the No. 2 slot. Second in hitting only to her twin sister Courtney, McArthur posted a .435 batting average with a slugging percentage of .654, knocking in 14 runs and scoring 18. The senior tri-captain, bound for Mount Ida College in the fall, posted a team-best .985 fielding percentage in the outfield. –www.projo.com

Lacrosse:
Devan Miller ‘14, Center
Leading Bay View in nearly every category, Miller had 57 goals and 11 assists, including nine goals and two assists in the fifth-seeded Bengals’ run to the Division I semifinals. “Devan has had an enormous impact on the success of this year’s team,” Bay View coach Kelly Souza said of her junior captain. “She is a natural goal scorer and dominates on draw controls. Perhaps her greatest strength is her two-way play. She has an infectious work ethic and enthusiasm for the game. Her confidence in her teammates got the best out of them.”  –www.projo.com

Golf:
Gianna Quillen ‘16
Quillen earned first-team honors based on her performance in the girls state tournament. The Bengals freshman finished in a two-way tie for sixth place with two-time first-team All-Stater Mia Bartolotta of South Kingstown.

BVA Participates in 4th National Mercy Christmas Basketball Tournament

Sixteen Bay View Academy basketball players, two coaches and many members of the basketball players’ families traveled to Baltimore, Maryland over the Christmas break to participate in the Mercy Christmas Basketball Tournament.  The tournament, held on December 26th-29th at Mercy High School, brought together teams from Sister of Mercy sponsored high schools from Pennsylvania, Nebraska, California, Ohio and Maryland.

Bay View won two out of three games and enjoyed the time off the court by visiting tourist attractions and even taking in a basketball game at Loyola University, arranged by Bay View alumna, Erin Ferry '09 from Cranston, RI, and former basketball player who presently attends the University.

According to Bay View basketball team manager, Shannon McArthur, a senior from Coventry, RI, the team really appreciated the opportunity to meet girls from other Sisters of Mercy sponsored schools: “We enjoyed conversing with other Mercy Schools from all over the country and comparing the differences/similarities between our schools and states.”

This is the fourth time a Mercy Christmas Basketball Tournament has taken place.  Plans are already underway for the next one which will be held in 2015 at Mercy High School in San Francisco, CA.  Bay View has put in a request to be a future host of the event
